Journalist View on Social Media

Recently I created a post regarding Journalism & Social Media. I did plenty of research and found the same information when creating that post as I did when creating this post. I also got a journalist perspective on the topic of journalism and social media.

I asked one of the great journalists I know to assist me with this subject. There were some great responses that I received from the professional journalist I interviewed. Six important questions I asked provided me with content to create this post as well. Here are the following questions I asked Journalist Jessica Graue;

Question 1- Where do you get your news from?

According to Ms. Graue, she gets her news from multiple platforms. The platforms she uses are all official news based and factual websites. Some of the news stations that are used for this specific journalist is WHIO, Dayton Daily News, CNN, and evening newspapers.

Question 2: What is your favorite social media platform? /Is this your go-to platform as well?

Everyone has a preference and Ms. Graue is no different. Each social media site is used specifically what they are already known for. When asking about the go to platform, Ms. Graue stated each is more so social used than to get news.

“I use Facebook for catching up. I have a page for comedy. I would use Twitter to read comments and breaking news and public opinions. Climate of society.” – Jessica Graue

Question 3: Do you like getting information from social media or would you rather stick to hard facts?

Sticking to the hard facts because social media is not reliable is the biggest cause as to why Ms. Graue does not retrieve information from social media. Tries to stay away from Social media.

As stated by Ms. Graue, “the best social media place to get any news from is Twitter. Use social media more for local news than national news.”

Question 4: Have you ever received fake news when writing an article from anybody?

I have always known and heard, having friends in the filed career you are interested in, helps a lot. As per Ms. Graue, following colleagues that are professional is the best way to stay away from fake news. This professional woman has been friends with associates for 16+ years. Some of her friends even work at USAToday.

Question 5: Can you list three current stories that impact your publication?

This was a tough question because the coronavirus is the most talked about and as stated it is “tricky and scary”. The public is even finding old articles regarding this virus and many more.

Question 6: Is social media destroying the news?

Ms. Graue answered this question just how other people I have heard answer as well. “Social media not destroying news, people are. They take things out of context and it makes people out to be more vigilant. People need to be smarter about what they post.” -Graue

Everyone has there own opinions but at the same time, it can look like everyone just wants to argue. What was being explained in the quote above by Ms. Graue is when someone sees something, they instantly get a response before looking for facts. They do not take the time to find the exact reason as to why it was posted or see the individuals perspective on what was posted. Awareness can just be the reason and they have another standpoint on a subject.

Seeing fake news is irrelevant but not using it is a choice that Ms. Graue makes. There most likely are other journalists that use social media as a reference but most of the time, no one would want to use the information they are not sure is factual and opinionated. I would love to hear others thoughts on these questions, specifically #6. Social media has changed journalism and journalists minds as well. The change has been drastic and it is nowhere near close to being done. As social media grows, so does journalism and vice versa.

I love scary movies, so I write about them the most. I am currently in school studying Journalism/Communications. I also work, sometimes too much & don’t take a break. My birthday is in August, so I love to admit that I am a Leo. I am open to answer any questions that people have or do any recommendations on pieces that people have.
